Miss USA R'Bonney Gabriel crowned Miss Universe

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — R'Bonney Gabriel, a fashion designer, model and sewing instructor from Texas who competition officials said is the first Filipino American to win Miss USA, was crowned Miss Universe on Saturday night. Gabriel closed her eyes and clasped hands with runner-up Miss Venezuela, Amanda Dudamel, at the moment of the dramatic reveal of the winner, then beamed after her name was announced. Thumping music rang out, and she was handed a bouquet of flowers, draped in the winner's sash and crowned with a tiara onstage at the 71st Miss Universe Competition, held in New Orleans.

Portage man accused of raping young girl while watching porn

CAMBRIA CO, Pa (WJAC) — State police in Cambria County have arrested and charged a Portage man who is accused of sexually assaulting a young girl on multiple occasions, according to a criminal complaint. Troopers say 28-year-old Andrew Maul faces charges of involuntary deviate sexual intercourse with a child, indecent assault and corruption of minors, according to court documents. The complaint states that troopers were notified of the assaults in June by Cambria County CYS.

'Suspension lifted:' Former Westmont teacher Shawn Miller eligible to teach again in PA

CAMBRIA COUNTY, Pa (WJAC) — There is another update on the case of a former Westmont teacher who was accused of raping an elementary student in 2015. The Department of Education tells 6 News that Shawn Miller is clear to teach again in the state. As we reported last week, the Cambria County district attorney dismissed the second and only remaining assault charge against Miller. In May of 2022, Miller was arrested for raping one student and for indecent assault of another.

Berlin man accused of assaulting officer after police respond for PFA violation

Somerset Co., PA (WJAC) — Authorities say a Somerset County man is behind bars after he allegedly punched a woman and kicked a police officer in the face. Investigators say on Sunday, Windber police were called to a 17th Street home for a report of an unwanted person. Police say 25-year-old Cameron Kenney, of Berlin, was at the home and had reportedly punched a woman there in the face the prior day.

Could sheriffs get investigative powers?

Local sheriffs said there is only one they are not on a level playing field with state and local police. Sheriff departments are not allowed to investigate potential incidents. Sheriffs said their department can make an arrest if the evidence is in plain sight but otherwise, the investigation must be handed off to another department in the area. This happens to them daily according to sheriffs, even though they said many of the over 2,000 sheriff deputies in the state have previous training and experience with investigative agencies.

Johnstown Rite Aid among those offering COVID-19 testing

JOHNSTOWN, Pa (WJAC) — Rite Aid announced Wednesday that there are 21 more COVID-19 self-swab testing sites, including at four of its stores that will open this week One of those is on Market Street in Johnstown. Officials with Rite Aid say starting Thursday, each test will be overseen by Rite Aid pharmacists. It'll run through the store's drive-through window. According to Rite Aid, everyone 18 years or older can get a test even if they're asymptomatic.

Police locate vehicle of man who threatened troopers with knives, suspect still at large

2nd UPDATE |Huntingdon Co., PA (WJAC) — State Police in Huntingdon County announced Thursday that authorities have recovered the vehicle belonging to 40-year-old Jedediah Rawlings. Rawlings is wanted for allegedly threatening troopers with knives during a traffic stop earlier this week. Police say Rawlings is still at large and anyone who sees him is asked to use extreme caution. Anyone with knowledge of his whereabouts is asked to contact PSP Huntingdon at 814-627-3161.

'Go ahead & shoot me!' Man held employees at gunpoint at Somerset Co. business, PSP says

Somerset Co., PA (WJAC) — Authorities say a Somerset County man is behind bars after he allegedly held employees of a Milford Township business at gunpoint. Police say on Tuesday, 81-year-old Kermit Gribble began arguing with employees at Keystone Wheel Polishing, located along New Centerville Road. During the argument, police say Gribble went to his residence and then returned with a handgun. When troopers arrived at the business, police say Gribble disobeyed commands and said, “go ahead and just shoot me.
