Charges dismissed against former Westmont music teacher accused of raping student

Johnstown, PA (WJAC) — Authorities have confirmed to 6 News that charges in one of the two cases against former Westmont Hilltop music teacher Shawn Miller have been dismissed. During a hearing last week, President Judge Norman Krumenacker III ordered that the charges be withdrawn after prosecutors filed a motion to have them dismissed without prejudice. Officials with the Cambria County District Attorney's office say "an evidentiary issue arose which made it ethically and constitutionally improper to continue to proceed with the case at this time.

Expansion of Moshannon Valley EMS service to include training of more EMTs, in-person house calls

Centre Co., PA (WJAC) — In Centre County, a project that was first envisioned as an expansion for an emergency services organization is now projected as a new health care agency for the Moshannon Valley area. The Moshannon Valley EMS expansion plans have been in the works for several years as the organization looks to move out of cramped quarters to a larger facility that will be built at the site of the former Philipsburg hospital site.

Officials believe one substance that has sickened more than two dozen employees is a clear, odorless chemical known as synthetic marijuana.

Free app allows tracking of 2019 cicada brood

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (WJAC) — You’ve probably heard by now that a massive swarm of 17-year cicadas are expected to emerge from the ground in parts of western Pennsylvania this spring. Well, where are they? Cicada experts have designed an app to answer just that. The free app is called Cicada Safari, and it allows users to track, photograph and map the interesting insects. "Periodical cicadas are bugs of history," Dr. Gene Kritsky said in a press release.

GW president says school needs help from DC police as protesters call for beheadings

WASHINGTON (TND) — The president of George Washington University said late Sunday night her school needs the help of local police to restore law and order as anti-Israel encampment activities continue. GW President Ellen Granberg’s released a statement Sunday denouncing the encampment degeneration over the weekend. Granberg also said the school cannot restore order without the help of Washington’s Metropolitan Police Department (MPD). “The demonstration, like many around the country, has grown into what can only be classified as an illegal and potentially dangerous occupation of GW property,” Gransberg said.

Hollidaysburg woman arrested for selling drugs to undercover officer

A 54-year-old Hollidaysburg woman has been charged after she allegedly sold drugs to an undercover police officer. According to a probable-cause affidavit, Jacqueline Barnett, Old Route 22, first sold $800 worth of methamphetamine and heroin to the officer on March 18 in Alleghany Township. According to the affidavit, Barnett sold 17.5 grams of meth to the officer on April 21 and nearly three ounces of meth on May 2. After the May 2 buy at Barnett’s residence, state police arrested her.

Ice cream truck owner finds truck with help of social media

OKALOOSA ISLAND, Fla. (WPMI) — One day after after Michael Stadther reported his ice cream truck missing and posted it on Facebook, the truck has been found. "Facebook found my truck," Stadther said. "I can't believe how many people shared it and knew about it." His original post about the truck was shared over 500 times and was also shared by the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office. Stadther told NBC 15 that as soon as he found it was stolen from his lot in Okaloosa Island, he contacted police and put it on Facebook for help.

Port Matilda EMS Struggling for Funding

PORT MATILDA, Pa. (WJAC) — One local EMS service in Centre County is struggling financially and is calling for help. The Port Matilda EMS started posting on its Facebook page about its financial needs last November. Since then the company has received some funds and a very generous anonymous donation. In January, Port Matilda EMS hosted a soup sale for the community. A quart of soup was going for $6.

Former Penn State golfer qualifies for U.S. Open at Oakmont

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Former Penn State golfer T.J. Howe will be packing his bags for Pittsburgh. The 2010 graduate qualified for the U.S. Open on Monday during sectional qualifying. Howe, from Osceola Township in Tioga County, native shot a seven-under par 137 to place second at the Royal Oaks Country Club in Vancouver, Washington. He earned one of three spots among the 55 competitors at Royal Oaks for the 116th U.
