Once popular cosmetology school in Cambria County brought back to life by new owners

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (WJAC) — Johnstown area residents who are interested in cosmetology or barber school won't have to travel too far to get there anymore. That's because the L&D Academy Multicultural School of Beauty and Barber Science opened right along Bedford Street. "They won't have to go to Pittsburgh, Altoona, or Huntingdon." That's what David Jurcic, the Owner and Barber Director, said at their grand opening event on Sunday. "It's been a long time coming.

Pittsburgh Zoo leaders discuss future of Somerset Co. conservation center

Somerset Co., PA (WJAC) — Somerset County Chamber of Commerce members, along with leaders from the Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium discussed the future of the International Conservation Center housed right within the county on Wednesday. Leaders say the one-thousand-acre property in Fairhope is currently home to five breeding elephants, including a recently newborn calf. They say their goal is to continue growing the center to the point where it can house several other endangered animals and eventually release them back into the wild and sustain the captive population.

Everett Borough fire damages apartment building, displaces residents

A devastating fire burned through an apartment building on the 20th block of 3rd Street in Everett Borough Friday evening. Multiple crews were on site, but no injuries were reported. Everett Fire Company’s fire chief, Thomas J. Stone told us in a statement that fire companies from Everett, Bedford, Breezewood, and Roaring Spring were on scene as well as an ambulance from Raystown. The apartment building itself consists of 6 units which sustained smoke and water damage from the fire.

New bear check station in Falls Creek sees over 100 bears

FALLS CREEK - Year after year, many dedicated hunters go after one of the largest game animals in the state, the black bear. Since opening day on Saturday, a new bear check station has been in operation at the fire department in Falls Creek. As of Wednesday afternoon, 101 bears has been checked in. Bears killed in Clarion, Jefferson, Clearfield, Elk and Armstrong counties are brought to Falls Creek. The Pennsylvania Game Commission said as of Tuesday, 2,308 bears were harvested statewide.

Rail officials investigating 'minor train derailment' in Bellefonte

BELLEFONTE, Pa (WJAC) — Officials with North Shore Railroad are investigating a minor train derailment that occurred in Bellefonte Friday afternoon. North Shore spokesperson Jeb Stotter confirmed that the incident occurred around 3 p.m. Friday in the area of Sunnyside Blvd., and it involved two locomotives that were pulling several train cars. Stotter added that the derailment led to the road being closed for over an hour and that the cause is under investigation.

Senior football player with disability at Greater Johnstown scores touchdown Friday night

Johnstown, Pa. (WJAC) — One player on the Greater Johnstown football team with a disability scored his first touchdown Friday night. Yasir Robinson (also known as "YaYa") is a senior who had a stroke around the time of his birth. Although, that didn't stop him from scoring a touchdown and a two point conversion. "It was good. HARRISBURG – The Office of Inspector General filed welfare fraud charges against 63 individuals in August, including seven with local ties, officials said Tuesday. The restitution owed the commonwealth in these cases totals $252,435.58. Additional cost savings will be realized as the defendants will be temporarily disqualified from receiving public benefits in the programs they defrauded. The OIG filed 24 criminal cases of fraudulently receiving public assistance in Pennsylvania that were graded as a felony of the third degree.
